...finally.

Apologies for my being out of touch. I had to order a new journal from Diagon Alley and it only just arrived. Students who wish to take Ancient Runes in the upcoming year will be given the opportunity to sign up for the class within a few days.

Castiel, you must have been quite busy for the last few days, since I haven't seen you since

*reads a few pages back; strikes that out*

I swear, this place is like a zoo sometimes.

To those of you who will be here this morning for your first exam of the week, good luck. Just think, another few hours and it will all be over.~ Other years will have to wait a day or even two before coming to this point; try not to exhaust yourselves with anticipation. Scholastically speaking, I would call this a productive year for us all, so most of you have little to fret about.

And if I find out who switched all the sorrel inks with the etching acid, there will be.... consequences. After all, somebody has to replace that washbasin.

[[Feel free to have done the prank, if you want to accept the Consequences (plumbing repairs and detention for a week).~ Also note: this is not the exam post. It will come in a day or so when I finish writing it. ^^]]

..As I expected. Runes starts today, and the classroom is virtually unprepared, the sink clogged, every surface dust-ridden, the supplies still boxed up, and my office still full of spiders. Pity that elf-magic can't be trusted around the mummy dust....

Two days into the year and I already need a break. I must be getting soft.

*paces, fuming*

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the term's first Runes classes are being postponed until tomorrow. You will have an extra free period today. Please read the introduction to your year's edition of White's, and be prepared to answer review questions about the material you learned last year. Thank you.

Confound it, those vials were supposed to be ready....

I find myself in need of at least two students, fourth-year or above, to bottle ink samples in preparation for my second-year class. Points will be given to those who assist. *appended note: No more help required... for now. Thank you.

*ink spatter* ..No, Marco, that is not a sugar quill. Go on with you, off the desk....

[[Filtered to Bob's students]]

Classes will take place, as they did last year, in the first classroom along the western second-floor corridor. Second-year students will need to bring a fresh supply of quills; upper years will require dragonhide gloves; and everybody should have their Wright's workbook immediately availab

*tooth marks; filter fails*

--Marco....

MARCO, BRING THAT BACK--!

[[Guess whose journal just got stolen by an irritated cat. XD]]

Notice to students:

For those of you who will be in my Ancient Runes class, be alert for the sign-up sheet and book-list which will be provided to you within the next few weeks.

Thank you, Marik, for that Imperturbable Charm. It made the childrens' impromptu Quidditch game the other day slightly easier to watch.

That van Helsing fellow must have lost his journal. Whatever it was that he wanted to ask me, it will have to wait.

..Where is Harry, confound the man? Those trolls couldn't have been that difficult to deal with, even for him. *paces* If Morgan... no, even he wouldn't have... hmph. I shall just have to give him a piece of my mind when he dares to show his face again. *fails to convince even himself* Lord knows he could do with one.

And that Auror... is either the most zealous private tutor that ever lived, or there's some other reason for his stopping here. One thing's for sure: he never would have knowingly let me catch him with such a serious expression on his face. If Daisya will not confide in me... well, whatever the matter is, it will doubtless emerge sooner or later... for good or for ill.

[[Strike = unhackable, and may or may not turn out to be significant in the future. ^_^]]

ANCIENT RUNES SIGN-IN SHEET (II)

To all second-years, and any other students who will be taking Ancient Runes in the upcoming term: please reply to this sign-in sheet with your name, House, and year, as well as any languages or writing systems in which you are fluent or have at least a passing familiarity.

Sign-ups will be open until the last week of the term. You do not have to sign again if you already responded to the previous sign-in sheet.

For the upcoming course, second years will be asked to acquire clean copies of Twenty-Five Magical Languages by Ufar Haldah and Deciphering Ancient Runes by Smedly Lurge. Upper years will need Angela Cove's Symbols of Power: Linguistic Secrets Revealed, and everyone will need the year-appropriate volume of Wright's White Rites Rightly Writ with its accompanying workbook.

I've looked back as far as I can recall, and there's no sign of Tomoe in the ranks of the Dark as I know them. I don't see why there isn't, though. What could he possibly hope to gain by allowing his daughter to be possessed so haphazardly? Is it a plan? An experiment? There's more to learn, and yet... if he harms that child, I will find a way to bring the deed to his door.

A few more notes on this era's cryptological complications, and then Filch can put the tablets in storage until the beginning of the year.

[[/private]]

*singing as he studies the tablets, unaware that the lyrics are being transcribed*

Orpheus with his lute made trees,
And the mountain tops that freeze,
Bow themselves when he did sing:

To his music plants and flowers
Ever sprung; as sun and showers
There had made a lasting spring....

[[This is what comes of listening to Terrence Mann's Broadway work while writing a post. The verses are from Shakespeare's Henry VIII, Act III, Scene I, so Bob, who has a frankly magnificent voice, is essentially singing show-tunes from the sixteen-hundreds.

And to continue the memeage, here's the Candybar Bob Doll. Ta-da!

This post has been edited for quality control. ^^]]

Having trouble with our journals, are we? I suppose that given all the weighty matters being entrusted to the journal system every day, some form of leakage was inevitable over time. Well, I hope it's a valuable lesson for all of you. Stultum est timere quod vitare non potes. Si hoc legere scis, flocci non facio; die dulci fruere.

Vita luna est, et una salus victis nullam sperare salutem.....

To my future Ancient Runes students:

[["It's absurd to fear the inevitable. If you can read this, I don't care; have a nice day. Life is mad, and resignation the last hope of the vanquished." Strikes partially readable. All of which is cribbed from these sites.... just pretend it's real scholarly Latin, ok? XD The runes are Tolkien's dwarf runes as evolved from the Elder Futhark, and they offer points to anyone who can read or identify them.]]

Further Announcement about Ancient Runes

I have been asked to clarify the requirements for next year's curriculum. You do not have to know a second language in order to take the class. It is called Ancient Runes, not Ancient Dialects. While the class will briefly cover the definitions, origins, and branches of language, those subjects will be strictly background material to the study of letters, runes, hieroglyphics, and other symbols used in wizardry. Bring your English, and you may actually learn something.

*all the frustration in the world* If somebody will come to my office, they will find a minor leak in my ceiling. I would take it kindly if it were to be fixed before it wears a hole through my skull or the books beneath it are damaged beyond

[[The leaky water pipe in Bob's ceiling is dripping directly onto his skull and rapidly becoming worse, so if nobody shows up for a while, his crude bookcase is going to be very wet. Please, someone, think of the books! XD]]

Oddly enough... this is preferable to the constant din from the Great Hall.

*bops slightly to the beat*

So this is to be my classroom. Adequate, possibly, but a lectern would be more useful than a desk in my situation. Tools will go here; books along this wall; and the windows... hmmm..... The blackboard can stay, though. *dark chuckle* Must have a way for the dear students to demonstrate their work in front of the class.

[[Filtered to the TA]]

Rangiku, I'd appreciate it if you would give the classroom door a password, as I am obviously unable to use a key. Since you will also need access to this room, your setting the word will kill two birds with one stone. It's the first classroom along the western second-floor corridor.

My door now operates on command -- thanks to that TA... what was her name, Harnet? Perhaps next time we meet, I'll actually find out what she looks like. Difficult to believe that I can now gain complete privacy at will. *ironically* Good heavens, it wouldn't do to let all this heady newfound power get the better of me -- complete, untrammeled freedom can be as much a curse as this captivity.

Still, this office is inadequate for the formulae I wish to study. The middle classroom overhead is empty. Perhaps that'll work.

[[/private]]

Ah, now this is better.... *surveying the dusty boxes, upturned benches, sunlight filtering in from the cobwebby window* Enough room and more... as long as nobody comes in.

[[Bob hasn't been very social, so I'm forcing him out into a public area. He will be in an unassigned classroom on the second floor, filling the place from wall to wall with glowing, complicated magical equations. From time to time, he'll drop out of sight through the floor to check something from the books in his office. Feel free to find a reason to go in there. XD]]
