*sits up with a start -- her head had fallen forward on a large stack of books*

Ugh... Kate, I'm afraid there'll be a crick in your neck when we go back to normal. My first chance to sleep in six hundred years, and I spend it at a library desk! There's no justice in the world.

*wearily pulls another volume over, skims the index and table of contents... maaay or may not be nodding off again*

*some time later, sits up again sharply, then stands up; Kate's slender fingers tremble as they riffle through pages of notes -- and then Bob roars right above his open journal, unconcerned about the rest of the castle hearing him*

Castiel! Meet me in the Restricted Section, NOW!

[[If you're in Hogwarts, feel free to have happened upon Kate!Bob asleep at the desk. XD The rest of the action takes place in the evening, near (though they don't know it yet) the end of the body-switch event.]]

Be careful with Kate's body there, will you? I find it to be a bit precious to me.

And I think the entire castle heard you screaming for Castiel, or rather they would have if they were here. At least I wasn't asleep, I guess.

Did you and Castiel, ah.. discuss what you needed to discuss?

*impatient* You do know I can read that, don't you?

Well, I'm very sorry, but I may just have had a breakthrough. *still frantically going through all the notes* And it's entirely contingent on -- ah, there, diabolically clever, of course I didn't see it -- where is he!?

..No. Possibly he didn't hear me. *gnashes teeth, is a hairsbreadth from casting a Summoning, but that's against the Laws of Magic, compelling a thinking being against its will... why do all the good spells have to be illegal?*

[[Cas will have to show up so Bob can flail and throw magic at him, but there may be a place for Spence in the action, since we're planning to have the switchback occur right in the middle of it. >D]]

I think they probably heard you down in the village...

[How can Bob see through strikes?]

Not that far, surely. ..Now if you'll just excuse me while--

*thump as the journal drops to the floor*

[[Aah, sorry; often people use strikes as "stricken out by the writer but the reader can still read it if they pay attention". If that strike was illegible, disregard Bob's; it doesn't exist.~]]

*it takes Bob a moment, in this physical form, to realize that Castiel's arrived; she whirls around, frazzled, a book in one hand and a wand in the other*

*strides forward, talking rapidly as she leafs through the book* ..Castiel. Thank heaven. I was afraid we'd all go back to normal before you got here. Isn't that always the way--?

*shoves the book forward* Read this. Can you understand it?

[[In Bob's curse was a binding that prevented him, as a ghost, from comprehending (or even really noticing) the spells that might weaken his chains. Now that he's human, he can understand it, and wants to know if Cas can as a ghost -- up to you, though that might be a reason why Cas didn't find it before.]]

*recalls that his journal is still open on the table; turns sharply and snaps it shut, cutting off anyone who might have been listening*

*facing Castiel again, the wand playing between her fingers* ..Was it your impression that a spell like that, if properly cast, might weaken certain types of bindings placed on an otherwise self-determining postmortem entity?

It was. Why was I called, a second opinion is not needed.

[Because Cas obviously has better things to do.]

*obviously disgusted with herself* ..Well, that confirms that it was my own particular circumstances that caused these pathways to be hidden from me. That, at least, is a definite step, and I thank you.

*pauses, considering his next question, only now -- faced with the actual entity -- realizing that his guesses about Castiel's nature and bindings are mainly guesses, and invasive, impertinent ones at that; casts a silencing charm around them so no other wandering spirits might hear what they shouldn't*

As to the reason I called you, and not some other ghost... I wondered if you might have a reason to be interested in this particular set of spells.

I do.

[Castiel gets what you're hinting at. So he gives Bob one nod of consent and approval.]

*nods. there'll be time for any talk later, then: the important thing is to get this done before Bob switches back -- Kate is probably not very familiar with the theories here*

*waves Cas closer to the desk, where several books are open: he doesn't have time to ask, but if Cas understands the spells... well, it'd confirm that he knows a great deal more dark magic than the average ghost, but more to the point, it'd save a lot of time if he'd point out the one best applied to his situation*

If you wish to try, try this one.

*raises brows. yes, though... it made sense.*

Very well. *rereads the spell silently three times, almost ritualistically, to make sure of the procedure; closes eyes, opens them again, nods* Stand there please, if you would.

*"there" is a complex pentagram, missing a few essential components, which Bob had been constructing while researching the spells; only a few runes, specific to the spell and the identity of the subject, are needed, and Bob now proceeds to add them with a quick flick of Kate's wand*

*it's a difficult spell, yes. but Bob had, while alive, cast worse.*

*no problem. knowing which spell is the right one, the erstwhile sorcerer could practically do it with eyes closed. all that's needed is the magic and the words, and half the words Bob knows by heart.*

*starts reciting, quickly and fluidly, never stumbling once over the ancient syllables and complex wand gestures, and lights of many colors wind about Castiel in ever-changing patterns. sweat breaks out on Kate's brow, her slight body isn't used to the sheer force of the magic pouring through it, but Bob doesn't falter, though her lilting voice grows ragged*

*well, yeah. things that mess with the very fabric of your soul tend to do that -- there's a reason this sort of magic barely skirts being Dark.*

*Bob has another hand up, gesturing along with the wand, bellowing the last syllables and pulling the spell tightly through the cage of forces surrounding the other ghost; it's a terrible effort, and has to be very precise to break the bindings without letting them snap back and do real damage, but it's working; the spell won't do everything, but it does seem to be doing a lot--*

*yes... focus. focus is good. luckily it's almost over; there's not much more Bob can do without the spell fouling itself and probably destroying the whole room.*

*the unwinding isn't as difficult -- which is fortunate. as it is, when the last of the runes are consumed from around the pentagram, Bob staggers back against the table, gasping in breaths Kate's mortal body does need, trying to focus on whether the spell did what it was supposed to do or was the worst idea ever*

*also crouches down; it's easier to breathe closer to the floor... of course, the magic did something to the air and it'll take a moment for it to clear*
