Thank you, then, Miss Kasuga. *studies her comment for a moment, considering that his class is one place where such nitpicky curiosity might be useful* That is one bit of linguistic development that I haven't come across. Such compound/referential nouns are not unusual, though. One might as well ask why French translates "potato" as "apple of the earth".
