[[Filtered to Ancient Runes students]]

To those of you who will be here this morning for your first exam of the week, good luck. Just think, another few hours and it will all be over.~ Other years will have to wait a day or even two before coming to this point; try not to exhaust yourselves with anticipation. Scholastically speaking, I would call this a productive year for us all, so most of you have little to fret about.

And if I find out who switched all the sorrel inks with the etching acid, there will be.... consequences. After all, somebody has to replace that washbasin.

*...........who, for his part, is elsewhere in the castle, methodically shredding the edge of a tapestry<3*

[[Feel free to have done the prank, if you want to accept the Consequences (plumbing repairs and detention for a week).~ Also note: this is not the exam post. It will come in a day or so when I finish writing it. ^^]]

If students are still worried at this point, then they'll fail no matter what they do between now and the exam. I, for one, am rather looking forward to the challenge.

Personally, I expect all my students to pass with flying colours.

I shall look forward to seeing your work, then.

I plan to do just that. Is there anything in particular that I should keep in mind for the exam?

Excellent. It's always good to watch how Anglo-Saxon grammar changes between different eras; some of the evolutions are as drastic as those in the alphabets themselves, and can mean as much difference to the translation.

Mmm, that sounds straightforward enough. Thank you very much, professor.

Thank you, Professor. Admittedly, this class is the one that I'm concerned about.

[And by stressing, she means she could get an E and not an O. What a tragedy.]

Nothing in particular, I don't think. I just feel as though Ancient Runes work is more time-consuming, which could present troubles.

Ah. Well, that is true: at its best it's as painstaking as any drafting exercise. A steady hand does help, though.

You will find him with the tapestries near the Trophy room.

[meaning Castiel saw mr.kitty and simply watched for a while before walking away.]

From: [identity profile] bobthewizard.livejournal.com
Oh, is that where he's been? Goodbye tapestries, then. Thanks; it's good to know he's still in the castle.

*meanwhile Marco finishes his "work" on the tapestries and, bored, wanders off in the general direction Castiel's taken*

The tapestries have been... damaged, yes.

[Go away kitty, Cas isn't in an 'allowing' mood ever today.]

*facepalm* I used to be a dog person, you know. In life I was always a dog person. They do this thing where they actually pay attention when you tell them to get away from the furniture.

*eh, Marco just feels like wandering; surely it's coincidence that he's following Cas, right? Right?*

Can't understand him myself. He's more his own cat than mine, really, but he seems to like it in here. *wistful* Sometimes it's nice to feel wanted.

*eh, won't be much of a bother, will just circle around Cas once or twice to separate him from the herd, and then (being a Sphinx and highly vocal) introduce himself with an earsplitting MIIEEEEOUUUUU~?*

Your cat is at my feet.

[STARES.]

From: [identity profile] bobthewizard.livejournal.com
*..ok, highly amused at that particular mental image* Is he now? Shall I come and distract him for you?

*Marco STARES BACK and tilts his head curiously; this ghost is quieter than most of the other spirits in Hogwarts and the cat finds this intriguing*

Date: 2010-06-06 02:38 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] itscalled-faith.livejournal.com
Yes.

[GO AWAY. Cas doesn't move though and continues to look at the cat as if the cat personally offended him.]

From: [identity profile] bobthewizard.livejournal.com
*ugh, extended mutual staring. doesn't the ghost know that predictability makes the game boring? with another supraharmonic yowl, Marco appears to lose all interest in Castiel, focuses on a dust bunny in the corner, and starts tracking it and ignoring Cas with equal intensity, though the tangent on which he's doing the tracking is bringing him right in line with the ghost's feet*

*on cue, Bob materializes out of a convenient wall, takes in the scene, and tries valiantly to restrain quite an epic grin*

You have quite a... unique cat.

And quite a unique list there as well.

[OOC - Spencer has a PhD in Ancient Runes, so maybe he might understand some of the stuff on that list there? If you want him to.]

He's interesting, isn't he? Adopted me after I came to Hogwarts. He's his own animal, of course; quite different from the hounds I used to keep. Mind of his own like nothing I've ever seen.

[[Filtered to Spencer]]

*innocently* ..list? What list?

[[Hmm, it's really heavily locked, but maybe he can see that something interesting is there? XD This plot's still very much in planning stages. He's researching wizarding executions from about six hundred years ago. His own's among them, but he hasn't gotten to it yet.]]

He adopted you? Did you find him in the castle? It seems like someone might wonder about the whereabouts of such a cat if it happened to be their's...

The one right there of various runes. It's difficult to make out though... your scrawl is nearly illegible. Although I can see aeternum... so it has something to do with eternity.

[[Spencer sometimes has trouble taking hints, so don't mind him LOL. I think I'm actually going to change his PhD to Arithmancy.. I was trying to find the best wizarding equivalent to Mathematics and at first Arithmancy seemed too much like Divination, but I think it would be a better fit than Runes. Still, he'd probably have a running knowledge of runes because he reads. A LOT.]]

He'd apparently hauled himself in from the outside despite a broken back -- we're not sure what happened to him; it may have been an Acromantula attack, as he seems to hate spiders. I was the one who found him -- a nice surprise for a rainy morning. *wince* Our former Professor of Illusions lent a hand in treating him and he eventually recovered, but we could never find his owner -- anyone who'd abandon a hairless cat in this climate deserves to lose it, in my opinion.

........Well, if it were legible, anyone could read it, hm? It's nothing, really; just a bit of side research. Curse-breaking, to be precise. *remembers how smart Spencer is and suspects he may have said too much* ..The ancients had odd ideas about eternity, you know; ostensibly everlasting spells and bindings crafted in those days occasionally presuppose an "eternity" of the same sorts of conditions that were going on back then, and then somebody invents irrigation or radio technology and all bets are off. It's a fascinating project.

*glances at the weathered, rune-etched skull perched on a shelf nearby, and shakes his head; just an exercise, this is, nothing but an intellectual game; it's been six hundred years: surely nothing will come of it*

[[Heeee! That's cool -- maybe he can be involved in the plot when I figure out what's supposed to happen. And yeah, Arithmancy would probably fit maths better than Runes. Runes, I think, would fit philology, archaeology, and linguistics, but I'd guess Arithmancy (and math) goes back far enough that anyone who seriously studied it would have to have a working knowledge of some old languages and forms of lettering.

An acromantula attack? Are you sure? They're not native to this area though... mostly Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo. Anyway, I'm glad he was able to recover. I imagine that a broken back would be a terrible way to die.

So you're trying to break a curse that someone has set for eternity? Eternal curses are particularly hard to break, although if the caster was not very strong then there's a chance...

Haven't you heard? There's a whole nest in the Forbidden Forest. Our groundskeeper collects the spines they shed for fun, apparently. ..And yes... he's a bit of a miracle. The recovery period must have been excruciating, and yet he seems to have taken no psychological harm.

*um. hoping to heck that Spencer hasn't thought of checking historical records for his very dire origin story* It's a theoretical problem on which I've been working for some time. *neglects to add that the curse was laid by that century's entire Wizengamot* History leaves us some very pretty problems of wizarding archaeology. Have you ever had a pet project?

Re: [Filtered]

I... can't believe I didn't know that. That's rather dangerous and against several statutes of the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures Act. I will also never be going into the forest again if I can help it.

I see... well, perhaps Maron can help you. She worked as a curse breaker prior to this job.

I have a lot of so-called pet projects... mostly unsolved or cold cases. Unfortunately more "hot" cases usually take up my attention.

Apparently Professor Dumbledore has an "agreement" with the Ministry on that subject, something along the lines of "don't enforce it and we won't have to challenge it". Excellent notion.

Hm, that's an idea; perhaps I'll ask her. *meaning, no he definitely won't*

*finishing his work in the library, has to take the stairs back to his office because his enchanted journal can't pass through walls* Yes, they so often do, don't they? Urgent projects demand immediate attention and the more interesting theoretical exploration gets pushed aside. It's a harsh, demanding world.

I see. What exactly is the purpose of keeping a colony of acromantula here? The only feasible reason is to harvest venom, but I don't think Hogwarts students are brewing many potions that have acromantula venom is an ingredient.

It is. Sometimes I wish I could just sit in an office and only do research but... the active side of an Auror's job is very appealing once you've had a taste of it.
